Judas

This week we are studying John 13, Jesus washes the disciples feet and predicts his betrayal. I was struck by verses 21-30. Jesus is troubled and says "I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me." His disciples stare at one another at a loss to know which of them he meant. The disciples had no clue. Not even after Jesus said "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot. I always saw Judas as the bad seed because I knew the rest of the story, but I have never thought about it from the other disciples point of view. They had no clue. They were looking around the table wondering who it could be: Thomas, no he was willing to go through Judea even if it meant death; Peter, no he just said wash all of me; ...No, No, No, it could not be any one of these men. I have spent three years with these men on almost a daily basis. Intimate times. I know the hearts of all these men. I cannot fathom who would betray our Lord. Judas lived with Jesus, followed him, saw the miracles, saw a man be raised from the dead, heard Jesus speak the Truth, was in His presence almost daily. Judas lived like a follower, he must have said the right things, did the right things, because no one suspected him, not even after Jesus did everything but said Judas is the one. Judas lived among them and acted like them but he was not one of them. Satan masquerades as light, he deceives. Even those closest to Jesus were deceived. Satan is very good at his job. I need to constantly aware of that fact.
